Floor Stencil Supplies

Few supplies are needed and can be obtained at your local craft shop and hardware store.

  • Pattern (MB Historic Décor)
  • Paint of your choice – Jo Sonja water-based paint, which we now carry, or Japan oil paints from Stencilease 1-800-334-1776
  • Brushes – we carry assorted sizes of stencil brushes
  • Spray adhesive for the back of the stencil
  • Masking tape, Scotch tape, automotive tape (gives a crisp line when stenciling against it)
  • Measuring tape and wooden or a cork back yard stick
  • Indelible fine point pen (if pattern is more than one color)
  • Pencil/eraser
  • Paper towels (Bounty™ brand)
  • Palette paper (or styrofoam trays)
  • Palette knife or craft (Popsicle) stick
  • Plastic wrap to cover exposed paint and wrap brushes
  • Chalk line or thread when painting all over floor patterns
  • Newspapers, paper bags for trash
  • Paint solvent – water for Jo Sonja paints, paint thinner for Japan oil paints
  • ScotchBrite™ and Simple Green to clean stencil or bristle brush and thinner for oil paints
  • Folded towel to kneel on
  • #400 Sandpaper
  • Damp cloth
  • Optional: card table
  • Polyurethane, water base – Jo Sonja for small floor clothes;  or oil base or water base by the gallon for large floors

Stenciled floors are often given from 1 – 3 coats of brown antiquing stain and kept carefully coated afterward as wear begins to show. Jo Sonja paints mixed with their mediums can create a transparent stain to give an antiqued appearance.
